Overview
NNestled within a dense suburbia this remarkable establishment is Jozi's No1 Outdoors eco-destination that nature has kept a secret for many decades. Voted on no less than 9 occasions as the Best Picnic Spot in Gauteng, the venue is a mecca for social cohesion reflecting the Rainbow ideals of the nation. The Garden is one of South Africa's 9 Botanic Gardens, exclusively indigenous, almost 300 hectares in area and consists of both landscaped and natural veld areas. The natural vegetation of the area is known as the "Rocky Highveld Grassland" and consists of a mosaic of grassland and savanna, with dense bush in kloofs and along streams. A list of naturally occurring trees is available, and the variety of habitats accommodates over 600 naturally occurring plant species. The Garden is home to an abundance of wildlife, and a popular breeding pair of majestic Verreaux's Eagles nest on the cliffs alongside the waterfall. Together with the other 220 bird species, there are also a number of reptile and small mammals, including small antelope and jackal, which occur naturally in the Nature Reserve. The Witpoortjie Waterfall is the main attraction of the Garden. The waterfall is visited by thousands of people on a daily basis. It has also been used as a background for TV commercials and music video productions for groups such as the grammy award winner, Soweto Gospel Choir. The only genuine known natural Waterfall in Joburg it is also home to a pair of breeding Verreaux’s (black) eagles that have been living in the boulders above for almost 50-years. Its scenic and towering edifice measuring 70-metres along the cliffs makes it overwhelmingly fascinating. In summer the green lawns in front of the waterfall give the area an unbelievably magnificent scene. There are various themed gardens such as the People’s Medicine garden, Waterwise Garden (teaches water saving techniques), Geological Display garden (chronicles the evolution of the earth’s surface and has collection of various rocks) and the Children’s playground. The venue hosts a variety of events such as music concerts, fundraising events and exhibitions and renowned for its scenic beauty for wedding photos as well as music videos.
