Overview
AAfrican Vineyard Guest House & Wellness Spa Escape to African Vineyard Guest House and Wellness Spa on Kanoneiland, the “island of slow living”, roughly halfway between the towns of Upington and Keimoes, and experience country hospitality at its best. This beautiful, four-star, AA superior guesthouse, set in tranquil gardens and surrounded by lush vineyards, offers visitors fine, country hospitality in an area known as the Green Kalahari for its stark contrast to its desert surrounds. African Vineyard is uniquely located on a working grape farm on Kanoneiland (“Cannon Island”) in the middle of South Africa’s longest river. Whether your wish is to go river rafting, game viewing, wine tasting, or on a scenic photographic safari, African Vineyard is an ideal stop over on route to some of South Africa’s most iconic destinations in the Northern Cape. African Vineyard is also part of the Open Africa Kokerboom Food & Wine Route that runs along the Orange River from Upington to Riemvasmaak. Kanoneiland and African Vineyard are just: • 15km from the little river settlement of Keimoes; • 25km from Upington, the largest town in the region; • 105km upstream from the Augrabies Falls National Park, South Africa’s largest and most dramatic waterfall; • 250km east of the semidesert Namaqualand region that is transformed into a riot of spring flowers in August and September; • And 260km from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, a vast wilderness that straddles the borders of South Africa and Botswana, and is home to black-maned lions, magnificent birds of prey and the iconic scenery of the Kalahari. Visitors to African Vineyard can expect warm, country hospitality; delicious country-style breakfasts featuring fresh fruit, herbs and farm produce (served outdoors next to the swimming pool or indoors in cooler weather). Spacious, beautifully appointed rooms, from standard to luxury, open out onto the green oasis of a garden that is alive with birds. Dinners are served on request, as are six-course food-and-wine pairings (bookings essential). Directions (from Upington or Keimoes): Take the Kanoneiland turn-off from route N14. Drive for 3km over the bridge that crosses the Orange River. Turn right into the town and then left into the main road. Follow the African Vineyard signs for 1km and turn right onto a gravel road. About 500m on, African Vineyard is the first establishment on your right.
