Where to stay
African Vineyard is a four-star spa hotel in Upington. It is one of the few signature Kalahari Spas in South Africa, using Kalahari ancient desert products to rejuvenate and refuel your body. You can either spend time on the farm just walking through the vineyards and relaxing, or use it as a base to explore the surrounding area. Either way, you are sure to never want to leave!
Another absolutely incredible place to stay is Vergelegen Guest House at Augrabies Falls. The whole place oozes relaxation and luxury, from its air-conditioned rooms to its purple lit swimming pool. It is also conveniently located near to some exciting things to do such as wine tasting and rafting on the Orange River.

Take a Balloon Ride and see the falls like never before.A sunset hot air balloon ride over the Augrabies falls is breathtaking, special and the best bird’s eye view you’ll ever get. There is no better way to take in the full majesty of our country than from a hot air balloon high up in the air!
The Orange River offers plenty of canoeing, rafting and fly-fishing adventures for the intrepid traveller. Whether you are seeking a relaxing day out in the sunshine or a week-long white-water expedition, the Orange River is an exciting option.
For a bit of a difference on the usual Western Cape wines, take a turn to Orange River Wine Cellars. You can try out a varying number of wines, and pair them with a platter of cheese!
The seven-toed impressions and rock engravings route
The seven-toed impressions and rock engravings route is a 45 km drive on the Kenhardt Upington road. It consists of some of the best examples of San rock art in the country along with a very odd footprint impression in a rock. Take in the culture, history and ancestral antiquity of an ancient time past.
Housed in a building that was built in 1875 as a church and mission station, the museum showcases a number of cool little household objects from the province’s history. The museum is home to the life-sized statue of the donkey, sculptured in bronze by Hennie Potgieter. It represents the unselfish contribution made by the donkey in developing the Lower Orange River Valley during the pioneer days.
Where to eat
The Augrabies Falls National Park is an eat, play and stay destination! Being a San Parks venue, the accommodation is affordable and accessible. There are a number of restaurants on site as well if you are not geared up for cooking. The Quiver Tree Restaurant has simple food and friendly staff. Check out the falls themselves, where you can raft down the river, 4x4 through the park or take a hike. The options are endless!
Bi-Lo is a chilled bistro style place in Upington. The vibe is relaxed and the staff are friendly, with an emphasis on spoiling their customers. You can get anything from sushi and burgers to ribs there, and they have a great kiddies menu too. Relax under the trees in the garden with an ice cold drink while you wait for some scrumptious food to arrive.
