FFrom art safaris to custom-designed courses, in South Africa you'll find something to satisfy your creative urge.

Artist Dale Elliot (based in Villiersdorp) offers courses on different painting techniques and styles. Dale, a former attorney, gave up the law to follow his dream of being an artist. Thousands of canvases later, he is the expert on South African art holidays in the Cape.

If you’re looking for something more unconventional, the Stillbaai Art Retreat offers ‘inspirational art retreats for creative souls’. On their painting holidays all your senses will be stimulated as you discover your inner artist through painting, sculpting, dancing, eating and making music.

In stylish Plettenberg Bay the 5-star Fynbos Ridge Country House offers art and photography courses for beginners and experts. It also has acting workshops and cooking courses, all set amid beautiful mountain landscapes. If you are concerned about the environment, Fynbos Ridge has also been certified carbon-neutral.

Moving up the coast into the interior in the Drakensberg there are many artists and photographers who offer expert advice on any number of creative pursuits. The Cavern Resort provides a full calendar of activities each year on their website. There’s an excellent photographic course to sharpen your wildlife photographic skills as well as teaching you about shooting at night, or you could sign up for a specialist course such as botanical illustrations.

In Ficksburg, the Malutizicht Lodge combines art with golf, fishing or walking in the mountains, while a Neil Moss art course will take you to the beautiful town of Clarens in the Free State, with its green and gold landscapes. And if it’s some fun with clay you’re after, Millstone Pottery in the picturesque Western Cape village of McGregor, offers various workshops throughout the year.

These are just a few of the many opportunities to enjoy an art holiday in South Africa.
