DDURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA, 04 MAY, 2019: The announcement for the re-launch of the Imvelo Awards for Sustainable Tourism 2019, was made this morning at Africa’s Trade Indaba. The awards recognizes tourism and hospitality businesses that make a real, measurable and sustained contribution to responsible tourism.

The announcement was made by The Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (FEDHASA), which represents the interests of the hospitality industry in South Africa.

“The Imvelo Awards are important because it rewards organisations that are putting an effort towards sustainable tourism development but I think a lot of businesses are quite lost in terms of what they need to do, what they can do, and what business practices they are already doing that are not being recognized, said Dr. Niki Glen, Programme Director for the Sustainable Tourism Partnership Programme

This year sees the awards being launched with a difference. The Sustainable Tourism Partnership Programme has pledged to host 50 workshops, across the country, telling the industry about the importance of sustainable tourism, and the promote sustainable business practices. 5-6 workshops will be held in each province and are offered free of charge. The workshops will also touch on the importance of tourism associations, not only in the cities but also in rural areas.

“We are launching the Imvelo programme, this year which is going to be taking sustainable tourism for our members and non-member to the next level. We are training them on how to do responsible tourism through 50 workshops around the country. It’s the first time that we are doing it this way.” Said Lee Zama, CEO of FEDHASA.

The key objectives for Imvelo are as follows;

  • To support sustainable tourism through capacity building workshops
  • To encourage investment in sustainable tourism
  • To promote sustainable tourism development and participation in destinations
  • To encourage businesses to belong to a recognized industry association
  • To gauge the performance of the industry against responsible tourism indicators.

The qualifying criteria for the Imvelo Awards fall under the following categories;

  • Best Environmental Practices
  • Best Social Practices
  • Best Industry Participation
  • Best Economic Practices
  • Best Operational Practices

The awards are in association with South African Tourism and The Lilizela Awards.
