Robben Island Museum celebrates Africa Day with huge group discounts

WWhile Africa Day is observed on 25 May, Robben Island Museum is celebrating Africa and her people for the entire month of May, with group ticket discounts of up to 25%.

“Robben Island Museum is arguably one of Africa’s most renowned symbols of her struggle for freedom and stands as reminder of the strength of the human spirit, particularly in a time when South Africa and Africa at large are still yearning for true freedom,” said Siphuxolo Mazwi, RIM Senior Manager: Marketing and Tourism.

The economic impact of COVID-19 has touched South Africans across the board and to make it more accessible for locals to visit Robben Island this month, the following group discounts apply:

• From 2 visitors, 10% off

• From four visitors, 15% off

• From eight visitors, 20% off

• From 10 visitors, 25% off

“We are pleased to see an increase in young people visiting the island and want to use this opportunity to encourage youth groups, civic organisation and social clubs to take advantage of the reduced ticket prices for groups. In the true spirit of celebrating African heritage and freedom, and her rich tapestry of colours, textures, flavours and aromas, visitors are encouraged to proudly wear their traditional outfits for their trip to the island. “Let us shake off the Coronavirus gloom and indulge in colours from Cape to Cairo, Madagascar to Morocco,” said Mazwi.

A visit to RIM offers so much more than the opportunity to see Madiba’s cell and visitors are treated to an unforgettable experience of gripping storytelling that dates back to the early 1300s, brought to life by knowledgeable guides and former political prisoners who recall real life experiences in the finest detail. With an abundance of wildlife and a plethora of plant species, it is not uncommon to stop at an exhibit and find a Springbuck grazing, a tortoise crossing the road or an African Penguin casually passing by.

“While group visits are encouraged, strict COVID-19 protocols remain in place both on the ferry and on the island, with COVID marshals continuously monitoring the situation. We also encourage visitors to purchase their tickets online, via Webtickets to avoid queueing at the Gateway,” concluded Mazwi.

The ferry operates Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, at 11h00. Should the demand increase, additional tours will be made available. Regular local ticket prices are R400 per adult and R210 for children under 18.

There is no more fitting place to celebrate Africa, her triumphs and tribulations, than a visit to RIM where fun, fact and philosophy come alive!
