TTo raise the profile of Meetings Africa 2018, South African Tourism hosted a number of influential broadcast, print and online journalists at a media roundtable in early February.

Chief Convention Bureau Officer Amanda Kotze-Nhlapo gave a comprehensive overview of Meetings Africa, the business events industry on the continent, as well as more detail around South African Tourism securing more than 170 bids for the next five years with a total economic impact estimated at R3 billion.

Media also gained valuable insights into how Meetings Africa 2018 will subsidise the participation of 15 small and medium enterprises at the show. Small businesses such as these contribute immensely to the tourism sector’s development by adding diversity and generating income, employment and investment.

During the session, Barba Gaoganediwe, Head: Destination Promotions and Marketing Gauteng Tourism, emphasised the importance of township tourism and the need to push meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) in that direction to grow the economy. He said the province’s vision is to provide unique experiences that reflect South African culture by securing meetings in places such as Soweto’s Vilakazi Street, for example.

Meetings Africa 2018 will be hosting and welcoming a number of media representatives from the rest of our African continent and across the world. It is hoped that their presence, coupled with the theme of Shared Economies, will expand conversations around business events and focus on how collaboration can uncover innovative solutions to improve the lives of the continent’s people.
