Coastal Getaways

WWilderness in the Western Cape, built between long stretches of white beaches, lush green hills, forest and fresh-water lakes is fast becoming a popular town for travellers. Once overlooked in favour of the Garden Route siblings Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, Wilderness boasts exceptional accommodation, restaurants and activities on this gorgeous stretch of coast.

With perfect weather year long, travellers can enjoy sunbathing at the beach, canoeing, walks in the forests, swimming in river rock pools, or hiking in the hills or along the coast.

Here is a quick guide of accommodation you can book:

Moontide Guest: Lodge Southside Rd, Wilderness

Call: 044 877 0361

Situated right on the banks of the lagoon, its wooden decks shaded by 400-year-old milkwood trees, Moontide’s position is hard to beat.

Here you can sit with an evening drink and watch giant kingfishers diving for fish. The beach is a two-minute walk from the house, but you can also take a canoe up the lagoon into the Touw River, then walk along forest trails to waterfalls and fresh-water rock pools.

It’s always a pleasure to return to your sanctuary to play cards or get lost in a good book.

Did You Know?
TThe Outeniqua Choo Tjoe steam train originally ran through the town en route between George and Knysna during its years of operation.

PPorcupine Pie: 10 Mile Lane, Wilderness Heights

Call: 083 447 6901

Porcupine Pie, at the end of a winding, climbing road, is named after Neil Diamond’s famous hit Porcupine Pie.  It happened purely by chance after owners John and Judy Mcildowie found a small pair of porcupine prints in the wet concrete and decided to name it after the 70s song. At Porcupine Pie, a rare commotion of birds provides the best on-site birding around. You don’t even need to leave the deck.

Each bedroom unit is a stilted wooden chalet with a patio that hovers in mid-air. Amenities include mini bar, flat screen television, king-sized bed and breakfast.

Whale’s Way Ocean Retreat: 858 6th Avenue, Wilderness

Call: 044 877 0482

Whale’s Way Ocean Retreat is a beautiful bed and breakfast establishment situated right above the beach in Wilderness. Jaco and Mies admired Whale’s Way Ocean Retreat for four years before they bought it. Something about the high wooden verandah jutting out to sea attracted them whenever they ambled past. Their pride and joy are the pristine penthouse loft rooms, Ocean and Sky, both offering sea-facing private balconies and rear Outeniqua mountain vistas.
