WWelcome to the Santos Express Train Lodge, an unusual accommodation offering in Mossel Bay.

Just 30m from the Blue Flag Santos Beach, guests can take in the gorgeous views of the Indian Ocean while inside the old train, or choose to frolic at sea with a cocktail in hand.

Anne Barnard of Santos Express said the lodge opened in December 1994 with nine coaches. She compared its style to the Transkaroo first class, which operated on South African lines during the 70s.

Did You Know?
TThere is a tree in Mossel Bay that acted as South Africa’s first post office, used by sailors in the 1500s to leave messages. It is called “The Old Post Office Tree”.

“Santos Express’s unique accommodation, combined with an authentic train restaurant atmosphere, helps preserve the transport heritage of our country, as well as provide a major tourist attraction in the Garden Route,” said Barnard.

TThe lodge offers accommodation with sea views. There are single, double and budget compartments, a 16-bed dorm and four royal suites with private decks and en-suite facilities.

To cater to the demands of foreign travellers, the lodge added a bar and a restaurant.

The Fork and Train Restaurant, perfectly positioned with views of the bay and mountain, whips up seafood, burgers, ribs, pizzas and pub-style lunches. Guests can easily disembark the train and explore the beauty of Mossel Bay. Santos Express is close to many tourist attractions and excursions in Mossel Bay, including the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex and Harry Giddy Park.
