SSelf-catering accommodation in South Africa is a great option for longer stays, family holidays, business travellers, and those who just prefer the feeling of a home away from home, rather than hotel-style accommodation.

Whether you’re visiting the Kruger National Park, one of South Africa’s coastal areas, or an inland town or city, a wide variety of self-catering options provide viable alternatives to hotel accommodation when you’re looking for-value-for money stays.

Self-catering accommodation in South Africa varies from basic units to top-notch 5-star holiday villas, townhouses and apartments. Renting one of these can mean good savings, as you’re not paying for expensive hotel breakfasts – and you generally pay a daily or weekly rate for self-catering accommodation, rather than paying per number of people staying there. This is ideal for small groups of travellers or families on a budget.

Many of the Kruger National Park’s rest camps and bush lodges offer self-catering options. These include cottages, bungalows, chalets, guest houses and huts. At some bush lodges, self-catering amenities are the only option, as there are no restaurants on-site.

In the coastal areas, holiday cottages, villas and self-catering apartments are plentiful, and timeshare is also popular in South Africa. Many upmarket golf estates here also offer self-catering accommodation.

A growing trend is the emergence of upmarket apartment hotels. These are ideal for leisure and business travellers who prefer the freedom of apartment living, but still seek some of the services offered by hotels. Apartment hotels generally have fully equipped kitchens and are serviced daily. On-site facilities may include a gymnasium, swimming pool, concierge services, bars and restaurants. Some of them even have spas.
