AAre you yearning for a road trip? Road trips are becoming a good way to travel with close family and friends without causing a dent on the finances.

Johannesburg

Magaliesburg is just an hour and a half away from Johannesburg. Known for hot-air balloon experiences, travellers will enjoy unparalleled views over 48 000ha of wild countryside and see over 40 species of game on this trip. In Magaliesburg, you’re also right next to the Cradle of Humankind, thought to be the birthplace of the human race. The tourist spot delves into the history and culture of the world's richest hominid site, home to around 40 percent of the world's human ancestor fossils.

The adventurous will love the Canopy Tours, which offers zip lining through the mountains.

For those who want a little pamper session, then a spa day at African Pride Mount Grace Country House & Spa is recommended. Think massages, body wraps and facials in a serene, tranquil environment.

Foodies will appreciate Rambling Vine, a restaurant known for their award-winning fine dining. Coupled with its stunning wine list, Rambling Vine is a great destination for travellers seeking quality food.

Durban

For those Joburgers wanting to drive a few extra hours, or for those Durbanites who need some couple downtime, why not head to Umhlanga?

Umhlanga Ridge is known for its sandy beaches and surfing spots. The warm Indian Ocean allows for the ultimate snorkelling experience just outside the breakers and yes, you might see dolphins!

For those who want to splurge, why not take a helicopter ride over the North Coast. The views of the ocean are the ideal way to see the area and learn more about the city.

Umhlanga is home to a range of restaurants that serve some of the best signature drinks in the city. Some of them include Lucky Shaker and 14 on Chartwell.

Cape Town

The Western Cape is one of those destinations in South Africa that offers many road trip options. One of them is a trip to Hermanus. The seaside town, just an hour away from Cape Town, offers a range of activities to suit everyone.

Kick off your weekend with a horseback ride in the Hemel en Aarde Valley, which by the way, is also one of the country’s top, but slightly lesser known, wine routes. You can also cycle up the valley, from farm to farm.

Sticking with sports, African Pride Arabella Hotel and Spa has one of South Africa’s top golf courses, so you’ll be in good company getting your first lesson on the same greens that Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player have frequented.
