TThe northern Drakensberg is three hours from Durban, the right amount of time to take in the striking views of the province while not feeling overwhelmed by the drive.
The country smell was rich in the air and jolly road trip songs such as Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run will keep you entertained until you reach your first stop - the Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge, a 5-star spot filled with creativity and art. This serene spot offers the view of the Drakensberg Amphitheatre, regarded as one of the most impressive cliff-faces on Earth.
Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge hosts the Smoking Dragon Festival every year to promote the area and music. The four-day event features over 100 performances from the biggest names in the country. The lodge also organises hikes to the Tugela Falls.
AAfter a quick cup of tea by the pool, head to Montusi Mountain Lodge for a light lunch. Montusi Mountain Lodge caters for the mature traveller and those who seek some peace from the hustle and bustle. The lunch spread included smoked salmon rolls, baked beer bread, beef and custard crostini and Greek salad. Those with a sweet tooth gorged on sickly sweet koeksisters and fruit salad. The spread gave us much needed energy for our afternoon village walk.

TThe small village of eMazizini holds much history and the community are ready to answer your burning questions. No visit is complete without a taste of their Mfula Mfula traditional beer prepared by the local women. The brew has pineapple undertones.
The children in the area play a game of soccer to unwind after a long day of classes. Some of their mothers kept a close eye on them from their colourfully decorated huts. Next, head to Cavern Drakensberg Resort & Spa where a three-course dinner awaits you.
Rainfall is heavy in this part of South Africa, so pack something warm... Thankfully, the warmth of the fire at Cavern will help you dry off. The menu offerings included pan-fried kingklip with lentils and citrus yoghurt dressing, Cape Malay chicken curry, grilled kudu steak with red currant port sauce and bread and butter pudding. The chefs did a good job. Food aside, the Cavern is the epitome of mountain lodging.
After a restful sleep, get ready for an adventure. All Out Adventures offer zip lining, canopy tours, paintball, mountain biking and quad biking. Founded by Chris Mecklenborg and his wife, Loretta, at Montusi Mountain Lodge, this activity spot is the ideal way to end 24 hours in the northern Drakensberg.
