Back

EEastern Cape province, an intoxicating mix of coastal and mountain scenery, is home to many of South Africa’s hidden rural gems. It is also home to some fantastic golf courses, with well-designed fairways and steady to strong winds to either cool you down or provide an extra challenge.

There are more than 15 good golf courses to choose from in Eastern Cape, including the Wild Coast Sun Country Club, Royal Port Alfred Golf Club, St Francis Links and the Port Elizabeth Golf Club.

The Jack Nicklaus-designed St Francis Links is arguably Eastern Cape’s premier golf course. With its abundance of protected milkwood trees and spectacular water hazards, natural beauty is perhaps this establishment’s top offering. This 18-hole gem also comes with a selection of plush accommodation, making it the ideal golf holiday destination.

The Wild Coast Sun Country Club is one of the best value-for-money golf courses in South Africa and it also offers a range of on-site accommodation. On the course there are some superb ocean views and the compulsory golf-cart policy ensures that golfers are never too tired to take in the scenery. This 18-hole course is part of the South African PGA circuit.

Port Elizabeth, the largest city in Eastern Cape, is home to Port Elizabeth Golf Club and Humewood Golf Club, both of which are 18-hole courses. A common challenge at both is the strong wind that often picks up. Humewood has hosted the South Africa Open 4 times, and Port Elizabeth Golf Club has been operating since 1890.

East London, another windy but welcoming city, has several courses to choose from, including East London Golf Club (18 holes), Gonubie Golf Club (9 holes) and West Bank Golf Club (18 holes). East London Golf Club is consistently rated among South Africa's top 10 golf courses. It has hosted the Africa Open and is one of the oldest golf courses in the country.

The 18-hole Royal Port Alfred Golf Club has been hosting top golf tournaments for more than a century and offers excellent rates for visitors.

How to get here

Depending on where it is you wish to play, you could fly to either Port Elizabeth, East London, George or Durban and hire a car from there.

Public transport in Eastern Cape is very limited, so self-drive is the best option if you arent part of a golfing tour.

What will it cost

A round of 18 holes will cost between R300 and R700 at most courses in Eastern Cape.

Where to stay

St Francis Links and the Wild Coast Sun Country Club both have accommodation options on the premises.
