GGame lodges have long been a place of escape for travellers in search of the Big 5.

One of them is Mabula Game Lodge, a sprawling 4-star establishment located in the malaria-free Waterberg region of Limpopo. Known for its Big 5 sightings, guests should be on the lookout for the lodge’s five lions.

These big cats always find a way of making an appearance during a game drive. There is even a game drive catering for lion sightings. The Majuma Experience, at an additional cost, takes visitors into the lion section of Mabula Game Reserve at night to see these creatures in their natural habitat. The 1,5-hour drive also sheds light on the myths and legends surrounding them.

LLimpopo is also one of South Africa's richest agricultural areas. More than 45% of the R2-billion annual turnover of the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market comes from Limpopo.

EEvery daily game drives brings something different. You will be able to spot many animals including warthog, zebra, wildebeest, crocodile, giraffe, hippo and rhino.

As part of its conservation efforts, Mabula champions the Ground Hornbill Project, a conservation initiative which has set out to combat the declining numbers of the endangered Southern Ground Hornbill. There are currently about 1500 left in South Africa.
