TThe Legend Golf and Safari Resort in South Africas Limpopo province is home to what has been described as the ‘most extreme golf hole in the world' - the Xtreme 19th; the worlds highest and longest par-3 hole.

The experience begins with golfers taking a helicopter ride to the tee box, which sits high up a cliff on Hangklip Mountain.

From here it is a 576-metre drive to reach the pin of this unique golf hole. The tee box, however, is 430 metres above the green, allowing plenty of leverage – not to mention a superb panoramic background. The green itself is shaped like the African continent, surrounded by a bunker.

The average drive will remain airborne for some 30 seconds, allowing you plenty of time to marvel at its flight. All the balls are fitted with tracking devices, in case the drive is a little wayward.

The cost to play all 19 holes at the Legend Golf and Safari Resort is substantially more than your average greens fee (check current prices when you book), but it does include the helicopter trip to the 19th tee and visual footage of your drive from the Xtreme 19th.

A hole-in-one on the 19th also carries a prize of $1-million which is an excellent return on your investment, even after youve bought everyone drinks at the clubhouse.

The first birdie on this extreme golfing hole was recorded by former Barbados cricket star Franklyn Stephenson, who sunk a 7m putt after his booming drive finished on the green.

Many celebrities have played this hole, and some have done themselves extremely proud. Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman became one of the first golfers to record a par on the Xtreme 19th.

Despite the excitement of the Xtreme 19th, the 18 holes preceding it are enough to create some buzz among golf nuts all on their own. Each of the holes is designed by a different golfing great.

So if you’re keen for a tasting menu, as it were, of the course-design skills of legendary professional golfers like Padraig Harrington, Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, KJ Choi, Trevor Immelman, Thomas Bjorn, Jim Furyk, Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Ian Woosnam, Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen, Legend Golf and Safari Resort should definitely be on your bucket list.
