IIt is one of the most testing, yet inexplicably lesser-known, physical challenges in South Africa. The 3-Peaks Challenge, with its origins dating over 120 years, is a gruelling but fun and rewarding challenge that dares participants to run up and down Devil’s Peak, Table Mountain and Lion’s Head in succession on one day.
What better way to enjoy and immerse oneself in the Table Mountain National Park than on foot? This natural world heritage site, and one of the New 7 Wonder of the World, is host to breathtaking scenery with mountains plunging before the waters of the icy Atlantic Ocean and covered in beautiful indigenous fynbos. You can enjoy it all with the 3 Peaks Challenge.
Here’s what you can expect if you want to take on Cape Town’s mountainous holy trinity:
First Peak: Devil’s Peak
Your challenge begins at the place it all started back in 1897 at 108 Long Street, or what was then the Johannesburg Hotel. Head up Long Street and turn left onto Orange Street before proceeding up Upper Buitenkant Street to Deer Park Drive and enter Deer Park. Get moving and zip through Deer Park to Tafelberg Road, where you will note a pine tree at the top that serves a landmark. Take this left at Tafelberg Road and you’re on your way to Devil’s Peak.
CCarry on along the path in the general direction of the peak. As the path takes you on an ascent you will come upon a distinctly large rock, which is your cue to turn right. Look out for paths that climb to the left of Devil’s Peak and start heading toward the peak. Once you’ve reached the second beacon, 100 metres from the first, you can begin to make your way back to the city centre.
Conquer Cape Town
RReturn to Greenmarket Square.
Second Peak: Maclear’s Beacon (Table Mountain)
Just as with the ascent of the first peak, participants are to run up to Tafelberg Road where instead of turning left at the same landmark pine tree, they will turn right. This is how you begin your journey towards the route that will take you up Platteklip Gorge. It’s pretty simple at this point, just follow the signs, and look out for one sign in particular that signals the main ascent up the gorge.
Stay on the path and keep hustling. Once you’re at the top of the gorge, turn left and follow the yellow footprints to Maclear’s Beacon (the highest point on Table Mountain). Well done. Now run back down to the city centre and have a well-deserved drink of water or grab a quick bite to eat - you’re so close to glory.
Return to Greenmarket Square.
Third Peak: Lion’s Head
Run all the way up Kloof Nek Road until you’re at Signal Hill Road, which is where you will be taking a right. This is the route for you to take to access Lion’s Head.
Head up along the path as it winds up to the contour path where you will encounter the chains and ladders that you need to scramble up to reach the summit. Once you’ve reached the top of Lion’s Head, you can begin your final descent. Get excited for your run down to Greenmarket Square, where you will be finishing the 3 Peaks Challenge. Well done.
What you should know:
- This is a fairly informal challenge and as such there are no direction marshals along the route. Participants are therefore encouraged to familiarise themselves with the route beforehand or to run with someone who is familiar with the route.
- In addition to the above, it should be noted that the challenge is obviously quite demanding of participants physically, so make sure that you are fit and healthy when taking on the 3 Peaks. With a variety of weather conditions, make sure you dress appropriately and come prepared.
- The 3 Peaks Challenge goes through the Table Mountain National Park area, which is an ecologically protected space. As such, participants are requested to be mindful of their impact on the area. Ways to mitigate any potential harm include staying on clearly designated paths, avoiding contact with vegetation and not littering among other things.
- Date: 3 November (provisional date)
- Time: Start at 05:00 and cut-off at 19:00
- Price: To be confirmed.
If you're not up to the challenge, fret not as there are alternative ways to enjoy the natural splendour of Cape Town.
Called the 3 Peaks Fun Challenge, the 3 Peaks can be tackled at a much more leisurely pace. Described as being more of a social gathering than a race or challenge, the 3 Peaks Fun Challenge is an easy way for families and friends to get out and have an epic Cape adventure. Instead of trying to summit 3 Peaks in one day, the fun challenge takes place over three days, leaving ample time for exploration and celebration after a successful summit.Whatever challenge you decide to take on, make sure you have a great time.
