AAnyone interested in golf and safaris should be making plans to visit Limpopo province. There are courses in this region where wild animals literally walk across the fairways, allowing for an undeniably authentic African golf experience.

Limpopo province is home to world-class game reserves such as the Kruger National Park, Mabula Private Game Reserve and Thornybrush Game Reserve. Perhaps less well known are the superb Limpopo golf courses like Legend Golf & Safari Resort, Hans Merensky Hotel & Spa and Euphoria Golf Estate.

Legend Golf and Safari Resort have a truly one-of-a-kind offering in their 'Extreme 19th' hole, which has been shaped to resemble the African continent. The tee box for this hole is nearly half a kilometre above the ground on top of a mountain and best accessed by helicopter. It’s a similar distance to the green but, because of the elevation, reaching the green from the tee is possible, hence the par-3 status of this hole. Several golfers have birdied this hole, and Hollywood actor Morgan Freeman is among those who have achieved par.

The Hans Merensky Golf Course borders the Kruger National Park, allowing golfers the opportunity to easily search for the Big 5, as well as for that elusive hole-in-one. Wildlife such as giraffe roam the fairways of this parklands course, allowing for a rather unusual round of golf.

Euphoria Golf Estate is located in the lush green mountains of the Waterberg, an area known for its abundance of private game reserves and lodges. Less than 2 hours' drive from Johannesburg, this bushveld links course offers a decent challenge, with several unforgiving fairways. There is ample accommodation near the course, and visitors are always welcome.

If you’re on a budget, the Polokwane Golf Club is a good, affordable option. The club was founded nearly 150 years ago and still has an old-school charm about it. There are 18 holes and some challenging kikuyu fairways.
