Spa

CChildren's spa treatments may be a recent addition to the local wellness scene in South Africa, but that doesn’t mean that such treatments are an after-thought, or an adjunct to the main spa menu.

On the contrary, extra effort and research goes into developing spa treatments and products suitable for children and teens.

Spas are keenly aware of the added responsibility of working with children, and parental supervision is encouraged, and in some cases required, during treatments. Life Day Spa has a camera app that can be downloaded, allowing moms to see what their kids are doing at any given time, with the touch of a button. Life Day Spa also offer ‘mom and me and ‘sisterly love packages, as well as themed kids parties.

Teen facials differ from the adult version as they are geared towards the individual needs of the teenager’s skin, and can help with conditions like facial acne. Massage treatments for children and teens are also shorter in duration than those for adults.

In the Magaliesberg in the North West province, Sparkling Waters Hotel and Spa proves that spas aren't just for girls - it has a popular babes and dudes spa spot for girls and boys between 4 and 12 years, which offers a selection of 20-minute massages and a mini-facial with a chocolate mask that is a hit.

A day at Spa Afrique in Northcliff, Johannesburg, for children aged between 6 and 13 could include a chocolate wrap and peppermint massage, or a strawberry milkshake wrap with a vanilla massage. A selection of spa treatments can be tailored for birthday pamper parties for children from 6 to 16 years.

Gingko spas at Steenberg in Constantia and Arniston in the southern Cape offer a teen and mom retreat package as well as a teen ‘chill out package.

The Mangwanani African Spa, located in major centres around South Africa, has created an African princess pampering and spa diva packages. Children's spa treatments vary according to the package selected, but include body and face pampering, hair braiding and glitter tattoos. A trendy pamper hamper is an optional extra.
