TThe River Club Golf Course in Sandton is one of Johannesburg’s most exclusive and upmarket golf courses. To get a round on this course, you need to be invited by a member, or go through the process of becoming a member yourself. Once you do you’ll be able to experience golf at its classiest.

Sandton is arguably one of Johannesburg’s most upmarket suburbs and the River Club Golf Course upholds this reputation to a tee, so to speak. But while Sandton is a buzzing urban metropolis, the River Club course offers serenity to those lucky enough to grace its lush, green kikuyu fairways.

The surroundings are a mix of plush residential establishments and woodlands. Established in 1967,  the course was designed by Bob Grimsdell and upgraded by Rob O’Friel in 1998. This hidden gem is regularly rated among the top 10 in South Africa.

The par 71, 18-hole Johannesburg course is fairly flat and offers some challenging dog-leg holes. You will no doubt be grateful for local advice about how to best approach such holes, which you can get from one of the members, or from one of the experienced caddies at the course.

According to a review on the Where2Golf website, Riverclub is the most elite golf course in Johannesburg, because of how rarely it is used. The review raves about the 'inspired' par 3s, particularly the 17th hole, which requires a long drive over water. The finishing stretch of this course is regarded as one of the most challenging in South Africa.

The course is 6 500m in length, offering a decent walk, although the clubhouse is never too far away. The course is kept in immaculate condition throughout the year, ensuring that every round played is an enjoyable one.

The Riverclub Golf Club logo features a red bishop; one of the many birds you are likely to spot during a round.

All facilities at this establishment are top-notch, as you would expect.
