The Eastern Cape was home to Nelson Mandela’s in his formative years, from birth to young adult. It seems only fitting that the Nelson Mandela Museum should sit here, branched between two key areas of Mandela’s life, namely Mthatha and Qunu. The Mthatha branch is housed in the Bhunga Building, a large white building with three wings. Loosely translated to “Caucus” or “Council,” this building has been called upon by local tribes and authorities for many years, but now serves as a museum dedicated to the life and times of the great man. Inside; trinkets, exhibits, and interactive activities all highlight the legacy that Mandela left, within 3 restored and gleaming white wings that rival their former glory. In 1989, both Germany and South Africa were at major moments in their respective timelines of turbulent divisiveness within their country. Ongoing struggles for equality and freedom saw both nations declare a new dawn for their people; Germany dismantled the Berlin Wall in November 1989, and three months later, South Africa watched as Nelson Mandela took his first steps as a free man in 27 years. The symbolic relationship between these two nations was solidified when Germany donated a piece of the Berlin Wall to Nelson Mandela in 1996. Although the Berlin Wall is one of the most powerful and enduring symbols of the Cold War, for these 2 nations it is a symbol of peace and of pride, as we both look back on dismantled divisive legacies, and forward to bright, unified successes.
