WWith the Sandton skyline changing rapidly as historic buildings give way to colossal contemporary structures; Tsogo sun has decided to keep the classical Sandton Sun building untouched while embarking on a R210 million refurbishment of its bedrooms, bathrooms, corridors and Atrium. This is part of a greater project by Tsogo Sun to upgrade nine of its most popular establishments throughout the country. The hotel group’s primary objective is to continue providing its large number of business and leisure consumers with the best possible experience at its premises.

The luxury hotel has long established itself for over 30 years as premium accommodation in the exclusive business district offering timeless hospitality in its 334 rooms and suites - each boasting generous windows that let in spectacular views of the vibrant city below. The 20-storey hotel enjoys a rich history as the first hotel in Africa’s richest square mile. It was built and run for many years by legendary South African hotelier Sol Kerzner, before it was procured by Tsogo Sun.

During the renovations, the Sandton Sun kept its famed spa open and its roof-top terrace fire pits burning. It’s grand café-style eatery San Restaurant retained its daily patronage from local visitors.  The accommodation facilities however, were shut down for business in February with a promise to re-open later in the year as a lavish yet functional spacs to suit the ever -changing needs of their modern guest.

It’s been a pregnant wait for reservation staff and guests alike to see if Sandton Sun will reclaim its luxurious hospitality title. Finally after a delay of three months, the lobby lights were switched back on and travelers’ walked through its doors once again. With street and hotel access linking to Sandton City’s new Diamond Walk, the remodeled Sandton Sun has slightly reduced its accommodation size to 324 spacious, modern rooms designed to enable guests to sit and work comfortably in private by adding simple touches such as USB points. The furniture throughout the hotel has been refurbished and repurposed to create a slick and sophisticated environment you would enjoy in any modern upmarket home of the surrounding suburbs.

The refurbishment was jointly funded by the property owners, Pareto and Liberty. While the responsibility for the design concept, its implementation and all operational issues relating to the refurb were handled by Tsogo Sun.

Marcel von Aulock, CEO of Tsogo Sun says: “This refurbishment has strengthened Tsogo Sun’s position in Sandton even further – as a leader in Africa’s most influential node with three hotels in excellent locations, as well as the Sandton Convention Centre. We are proud to have been a partner to Liberty and Pareto in managing this spectacular property on their behalf and to have been the hospitality partner of Sandton City for over three decades.”

Here’s to wishing the award winning Sandton Sun another successful three decades in the hospitality sector!
