DDigital platforms now shape first impressions and influence booking decisions long before travellers contact a tourism business. Holidaymakers are increasingly choosing their next destination after discovering it on social media, or after having watched travel videos, read reviews. Travellers are increasingly engaging with asking Artificial Intelligence (AI Tools) for recommendations.

European travellers are amongst, the early adopters of artificial intelligence assisted travel. And hence, for tourism businesses, having a strong digital presence is no longer optional, it is one of the biggest influences on booking decisions.

Travellers are increasingly using digital tools to support travel planning, spanning from discovering destinations to personalising itineraries and making more informed decisions. UK travellers are amongst the early adopters in the region.  UK travellers are leading Europe’s adoption of AI for travel planning, with usage rising faster than in any other major market. More than half (52%) of British travellers now use AI tools to support travel planning, up from 40% in 2025, representing the fastest growth in AI adoption among the major European markets surveyed.  ChatGPT is the most widely used AI platform among UK travellers (35%), with generating travel inspiration and ideas (47%) emerging as the primary use case.

In another study conducted across Spain, Italy and the UK, the global tours and activities platform found that almost half (48%) of Gen Z respondents cited TikTok as a source of travel inspiration, putting the social media app ahead of recommendations from friends and family, which ranked at 43% and 52% of millennials said that seeing a viral post or video led them to either book a trip or go on an activity, slightly more so than Gen Z.

Today's travellers are looking for genuine experiences rather than perfectly polished advertisements. Short videos of local guides, consumer reviews and tour guides, behind-the-scenes moments, authentic cultural experiences, and real visitor stories often generate far more engagement than traditional promotional campaigns, whether on Instagram or on Tik Tok or YouTube shorts.  Authentic content helps build trust and creates an emotional connection that encourages travellers to book, this is why travellers are interested in what a destination feels like before they arrive.

Some types of content consistently attract attention from European audiences. Wildlife encounters, local cuisine, breathtaking landscapes, cultural traditions, and personal stories from communities all perform well across digital platforms.  Cultural experiences generate emotional resonance and active participation rather than passive observation.  Interaction with locals fosters emotional identification with place, a psychological state that deepens long after the trip ends.

Tourism businesses can focus on telling compelling stories that highlight what makes their destination memorable and different from competitors.

Reviews, ratings, and recommendations from previous visitors have become some of the most influential factors in travel planning. Many travellers will read multiple reviews before making a booking, while recommendations from trusted creators, friends, or travel experts can significantly influence destination choices.  Encouraging satisfied guests to leave honest reviews and share their experiences online is one of the most effective marketing strategies available.

Given that European travellers are increasingly using AI powered assistants in their travel research process, to compare destinations, build itineraries, find accommodation, and discover hidden attractions that match their interests and budgets.  This means tourism businesses should ensure their websites contain clear, accurate, and up-to-date information that AI tools and search platforms can easily understand and recommend.  By investing in authentic storytelling, encouraging positive reviews, showcasing unique experiences, and maintaining accurate online information, tourism businesses can improve their visibility and appeal to European travellers who increasingly rely on digital channels and AI to plan their next holiday.

According to Data Appeal, experiences like wildlife viewing and scenic drives are notably highlighted as unforgettable highlights, often with praise for the biodiversity, peaceful environments, and breathtaking vistas.  South Africa’s natural beauty remains a major draw, and promoting sustainable ecotourism can sustain visitor interest.

The data from Data Appeal indicates that the sentiment for key European markets has declined slightly from 88,2/100 down to 86,5/100 for period January to August 2026. South Africa’s tourism industry benefits greatly from welcoming hospitality and stunning natural landscapes, however, it requires reinvestment in accommodation upkeep and infrastructure to address aging facilities and minor service issues. Focused improvements in these areas alongside continued promotion of scenic and wildlife attractions will likely sustain and boost visitor satisfaction from this region moving forward.

Furthermore, there are platforms designed to help tourism operators streamline these processes, potentially turning digitally generated consumer interest into an actual booking.

In this emerging ecosystem, platforms such as TourBiddy create opportunities for tourism businesses including SMEs to connect social-media exposure with efficient booking systems.  integrating consumer facing platforms with AI enabled booking and operational systems, could help create a more seamless pathway from consumer-generated inspiration, and product discovery, to booking.
