KKwaZulu-Natal’s climate and diversity mean that weddings in this province are among South Africa's most attractive. Venues for weddings in KwaZulu-Natal range from 5-star hotels to custom-built banqueting and wedding locations in a variety of settings - beachfront, countryside, bushveld or urban.
If you choose the beaches of Durban, Umhlanga, Ballito or Margate you can say your vows to the sound of lapping waves, with the warm Indian Ocean providing pre- and post-wedding fun, as well as beautiful views.
There are many beachside resorts in the province. Some, like the Palm Dune Beach Lodge and Hotel Izulu, are a convenient drive from Durban, while others may be further up or down the coast.
Historic inland towns like Pietermaritzburg, Winterton and Howick also provide romantic wedding venues. The province’s scenic Midlands are dotted with gems like Mooi River, Curry’s Post and Caversham.
These little towns lend a distinctive country charm to weddings, which are held on farms or in lodges and inns in the area. You will also find a number of country estates, many of which offer a fully inclusive wedding package.
In contrast to this temperate part of the province, further north along the Kwazulu-Natal coast, the climate is more tropical. Near here you will find some of South Africa’s top game reserves, many within easy reach of the sea, and almost all equipped to cater for weddings.
The Isimangaliso Wetland Park is a World Heritage Site and a drawcard for visitors to the area. You can also opt for a traditional Zulu wedding near Ulundi or Nongoma, close to the world-famous Hluhluwe-Imfolozi national park.
The province is also suited to trendy urban cocktail functions in the multicultural city of Durban, which has many hotels to choose from, some with views of the Indian Ocean. Other city venues include the Durban Botanic Gardens, the Japanese Gardens, the City Hall and the harbour.
The majestic Drakensberg mountains also make for beautiful weddings in KwaZulu-Natal. Hartford House near Giant's Castle has a stately ambience, perfect for a formal wedding, while Cathedral Peak Hotel has a quaint stone-and-thatch chapel in what is one of the most beautiful spots in South Africa.

Durban is easily accessible by road or air, with the King Shaka International Airport connecting the province to cities around the world.
Best time to visit
KwaZulu-Natal has good weather all year round, while the Drakensberg offers beautiful summer weather and the chance of snow for a winter wedding. Summer months can be very hot and humid, with frequent thundershowers between October and April.
Things to do
KwaZulu-Natal has two World Heritage Sites, the Isimangaliso Wetland Park and the majestic Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. There are numerous beaches, game reserves and historic sites, as well as its rich Zulu culture, to discover.
What to pack
Durban is famed for its mild, sunny winter climate and year-round ‘fun-in-the-water’ weather, so remember your swimming things, a hat and sunscreen.
