QQuad biking is a four-wheeled fun experience in the great outdoors. The sport's growing popularity has seen adventure trails open up across South Africa, from coast to countryside. Almost every province offers its own special interpretation and unique scenic routes.

With its rugged terrain and wide-open spaces, South Africa offers the perfect platform for the popular adventure sport of quad biking.

These tough four-wheelers are a fun way of getting out into the real countryside, away from traditional routes and crowds of visitors.

If you haven't tried it before, quad biking is an exciting, adrenaline-filled adventure that's not difficult to master. All that is required is a sense of balance and lust for life.

All quad bike adventure organisations provide basic instruction for beginners ahead of the ride. You'll be shown how to fit your helmet, control the bike and change gear (on larger bikes), avoid mistakes and get the best from your ride.

QQuad biking adventures differ in terms of scenery and terrain. Whether it's the lure of the Drakensberg mountains, the appeal of Eastern Cape's long, sandy beaches, or Limpopo's Valley of the Elephants, the sheer variety of destinations is overwhelming.

Most quad bike outlets take into consideration varying levels of competence, and usually offer beginners', intermediate and advanced trails, so novice and expert alike are guaranteed a good time.

The fairly flat, desert-like Karoo and Namaqualand regions are a direct contrast to Western Cape with its indigenous forests, gorges and winding roads. A particularly scenic region for four-wheelers is along the Garden Route from the Breede River to the Cape Whale coast.

Free State province has trails that pass near the historic Vredefort Dome, while Gauteng has both nature trails and racing tracks for the enthusiast.

Since quad biking is an unfettered sport, it can be enjoyed by anyone just about anywhere. But even though the bike ride is the primary experience, don't forget to take in the beauty of South Africa's natural splendour.
