Small town charm

TThe Eastern Cape is known for its hospitality, and you’ll find some of South Africa’s best pubs and bars in this eclectic province.

Make sure the Victoria Manor Hotel in Cradock is on your list. Built in 1848, it is one of the oldest hotels in the country. The cellar has been converted into a charming pub, which has been declared one of the best pubs in the Karoo. When you’ve had a drink, tuck into a traditional Karoo dinner in the dining room.

Drive a couple of hours east and you’ll arrive in the university town of Grahamstown. The students of Rhodes University know a good pint when they see one. Make sure you visit the famous Rat & Parrot, where you’ll enjoy a cold one in excellent company.

If you find yourself in the curious village of Bathurst, don’t leave without visiting the Pig and Whistle Inn. The pub is the oldest continuously licensed pub in South Africa. The Bathurst Arms is also worth a visit.

In the far north of the province lies the secluded mountain village of Rhodes. Enjoy a beer at the Rhodes Hotel or the Walkerbouts Country Inn & Pub. The village is also a popular destination for fly-fishing.

Down the rabbit hole is the enchanting village of Hogsback, deep in the Amathole mountains. Book a stay at the pretty Hogsback Inn or the Arminel Lodge, where you’ll find charming bars and plenty of conversation. Closer to the coastline, check out the historic Hunter’s Pub near Storms River.

Remember to assign a designated driver for your journey.
