HHoneymoons in Limpopo offer a variety of experiences: pristine bushveld; wetlands and mineral springs; the mountains of the Waterberg and the Soutpansberg; and ancient cultures.
Three wildlife idylls exist in this province: the northern section of the Kruger National Park; the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve to its west; and the Waterberg Nature Conservancy. All are less populated than the southern Kruger National Park, and offer excellent wildlife experiences.
To kick off married life with the best possible safari experience, Limpopo features truly plush, top-end accommodation with service levels to amaze. Pafuri Camp and the Outpost Lodge in the Kruger, Motswari and Gomo Gomo in Timbavati, and Shibula Lodge and Zwahili Private Game Lodge in the Waterberg all offer romantic experiences.
Then there are the wetlands of the Nyl Floodplain and the Nylsvley Nature Reserve, which are incredibly rich in birdlife, especially waterfowl. Honeymoons in Limpopo can be infused with the intrigue of our ancient past. Mapungubwe, the home of a long-gone but captivating civilisation some 800 years ago, is a World Heritage Site, while the caves of the Makapans Valley have yielded important fossil finds and have also served as a stage for more recent chapters of history, such as the siege of Makapansgat.
Right up north, as baobab trees become more plentiful, the land of the Venda is found nudging the Zimbabwean border. It’s an area filled with myth and legend, sacred lakes and rain queens, which will colour a honeymoon with unforgettable memories.
As you journey through the province, Limpopo towns will reveal their distinct characters: Polokwane, the capital, boasts natural, cultural and historical attractions; Hoedspruit carries the safari feel of its neighbour, the Kruger National Park; picturesque Tzaneen is the balmy heart of subtropical farmland; and the more village-like Haenertsburg sports pubs and eateries, along with a 10km mountain meander with nurseries, tea gardens, and arts and crafts outlets.

How to get here
You can hire a car in any of South Africa’s major centres and drive to Limpopo, or fly direct to the province from Cape Town and Johannesburg via Hoedspruit Airport. SA Express offers direct flights.
Best time to visit
Limpopo is an all-year-round destination, with its hot summers (October to March) and dry, mild winters (July/August). Thunderstorms are common on summer afternoons. Game viewing is often best during the winter months, as game is easier to spot.
Things to do
Visit the Modjadji Cycad Forest, or take a trip along the Venda Art Route (also known as the Open Africa Ribola Art Route). If you can, splash out for a few nights at a luxury lodge in a private game reserve.
What to pack
A sunhat and sunblock is a must, as well as malaria prophylactics if you plan to visit the very northern reaches of the province (near the Zimbabwe border) and the Lowveld area towards Mozambique.
Where to stay
There are 3 national parks managed by SANParks in Limpopo that offer accommodation – the Kruger National Park, the Mapungubwe National Park and the Marakele National Park. All three have varying combinations of camp sites, luxury lodges, tented camps and accommodation in thatched chalets. There are also a number of private reserves offering big-game experiences and luxury accommodation, particularly in the northern Sabi Sand Game Reserve which borders the Kruger National Park, and in the Waterberg area.
