KwaZulu-Natal

Whether you start in the north or south, prefer the morning salty breeze to the evening’s gentle sunset, walk, run, amble, stand or sit, Durban’s beachfront promenade has a golden mile of options.

The Durban Golden Mile is one of the most popular beachfront stretches in South Africa. Not only is the beach one of the best in the country, but the promenade is lined with fabulous restaurants selling beers, burgers, chicken and seafood.

Did You Know?
TThe first South African Surfing Championships took place in Durban in 1966.

FFor swimmers, both south and north beaches are fantastic for dipping, waves, surfing and bodyboarding. Parents with small kids will love the paddling pools, slides and fountains. There is also the Rachel Finlayson salt-water swimming pool. For snorkelling, Vetch's Pier in the south is the best. The sheltered region nearby is a favourite spot for kayakers, windsurfers, jet ski riders and stand up paddle boarders.

JJust before Blue Lagoon you’ll pass more swimming beaches and paddling pools manned by lifeguards, as well as a popular fishing spot where the Umgeni River flows into the sea. For fishermen and anglers, the piers are at regular intervals along the promenade.

One of the biggest destinations here is the world-famous uShaka Marine World, an aquarium that showcases the diversity of the Indian Ocean. It is also home to the entire Wet 'n Wild Water Park. The weather in Durban is always warm, so you can enjoy this outing any time of the year. Once you’re done with the Park and Marine World, dine inside a giant shark tank or a walk along the pier to hopefully see dolphins frolicking in the waves. .

AAnother hugely popular landmark is the Moses Mabhida Stadium. Built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, it is now famous for games and concerts. There is an amazing sky car that gets you to the top of the giant arch, or if you’re more adventurous do the giant swing.

If you’re feeling lucky, the Suncoast Casino, with its wonderful restaurants and a private beach is at the top end of the Golden Mile. At the end of the day, choose one of the hotel bars along the way, put your feet up and take in the incredible sunset.
