WWorld-class skateboarders such as Tony Hawk have taken the time to coach children at the Indigo skate camp in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, and many volunteers in recent years have had memorable experiences interacting with locals who were previously unfamiliar with skateboarding.
If you’re into skateboarding and you fancy visiting South Africa on a volunteer programme, the Indigo Skate camp is an opportunity not to be missed. Whether you want to spend a day or several months volunteering at this camp, there is an option for you.
The vision of Indigo Skate Camp is 'to provide a meeting place where we can join in our common passion and be presented opportunities to develop and discover our skills', while the values include enjoying 'good times with friends in a healthy environment, encouraging one to make the most of their abilities'.
Members of the Isithumba village attend workshops at Indigo Skate Camp to learn the art of skateboarding, as well as various life skills. The project is the brainchild of Dallas Oberholzer, who was inspired by discoveries on his travels in Canada and South America. Local Zulu chiefs have given Indigo Skate Camp their blessing and the community has benefited from activities such as cultivating fresh produce. Volunteers get involved with tasks like preparing lunch and snacks for participants, and assisting coaches during skateboarding lessons.
Meals and accommodation will be provided as part the package you sign up for, allowing you a very affordable stay in KwaZulu-Natal.
Indigo Skate Camp has been featured on BBC News and a short film was made about the project by National Geographic in 2016. It is widely recognised for the valuable contributions it has made to the lives of both people within the local community and visiting volunteers.
