CCombine kayaking with wine tasting when you take a tour with Walker Bay Adventures in Hermanus. It’s a fun, safe way to mix adventure travel with fine wine and will appeal to both outdoor enthusiasts and wine connoisseurs. No previous experience is required.

Hermanus is one of South Africa’s premier outdoor adventure destinations and also happens to be close to some excellent wine estates.

Often adventure travelers are undecided about whether they would prefer to spend an afternoon in these parts wine tasting or trying out one of the adventure activities, which is why Walker Bay Adventures introduced the Lagoon Wine Kayak Tour along the Klein Rivier.

The adventure starts at the Hermanus Yacht Club where explorers paddle several kilometers to the well-known Mosaic Farm home to several award-winning wines. The tour is usually hosted by the energetic Herman de Vries, who is the first to point out the humour in being 'Herman from Hermanus'.

The ancient milkwood trees on the edge of the lagoon provide a serene setting for paddlers who move gently upstream. The lagoon waters are shallow and safe. There is a vast array of birdlife along this section of water, including lark, kingfisher, cormorant, blue crane and even flamingos.

Mosaic Farm is a lush setting with some excellent picnic spots and a range of delicious cuisine on offer. On colder days explorers can warm up around a fireplace indoors. Those who appreciate colourful flora will enjoy exploring the grounds of the farm. Home-made bread, cheese, jam and chutney are some of the produce explorers can take away in their backpacks.

Perhaps the highlight of the tour is Mosaic Farm’s Stanford Spookhuis (haunted house), which was built in 1892. This limestone building features an underground wine cellar and a restaurant that can accommodate up to 30 people.

After lunch and wine tasting, explorers are forgiven for feeling slightly lethargic and the paddle back to Hermanus Yacht Club is a leisurely one.

The Lagoon Wine Kayak Tour lasts around 4 to 5 hours in total.
