TThe Waterberg Biosphere and district offers infrastructure with excellent facilities and modern conveniences found in the many game reserves and conservation areas, coupled with the opportunity to experience the African wilderness in its pristine state. If the panoramic views of the majestic Waterberg Mountains appeal to you, how about exploring the area a little differently?

The guided Matlabas Zynkloof 4x4 Eco Route in Marakele National Park is the perfect excuse to pack the 4x4 and head to the park for a weekend.

According to Marakele head guide, Sydney Fhumulani Mikosi, the trail has been a great addition to the activities in the park. It not only showcases the beauty of the park and the Waterberg Mountains, but it also traverses areas not accessible to the general public. This one-day adventure takes visitors through the Big Five section of the park. A guide accompanying you in a separate vehicle will provide information about Marakele’s fauna and flora along the way.

Did You Know?
TThe Waterberg is the first region in the northern part of South Africa to be named as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Within the Waterberg there are archaeological finds dating to the Stone Age.

VVisitors will experience the grass-clad hills, cycads dotted along the mountains and Cape vultures soaring above. But don’t expect extreme off-roading, says Mikosi. “The trail is not very difficult and will not damage vehicles.” However, guests do need a 4x4 vehicle to join the adventure.

Bring along some food and beverages as there will be a break for brunch and an evening braai under the stars. While in Marakele, guests can also participate in other activities such as guided walks, guided game drives and self-drives to explore the rest of the park.

The Waterberg is one of the most mineralised regions in the world and numerous towns form part of the Bushveld Igneous Complex - 50,000km² treasure trove yielding massive amounts of minerals such as vanadium, platinum, nickel and chromium.
