Overview
TThis beautiful coastal reserve is conveniently nestled in the dunes and thick coastal forest was established as a protected area in 1948 and is 1 028 hectares in extent. Umlalazi Nature Reserve has the rare distinction of offering two unique and unusual attractions: it is home to the Palmnut Vulture, which is one of the rarest birds of prey in South Africa and also home to the fascinating Raffia Palm Monument. The raffia palm is the largest palm in the world. The estuary provides an ideal nursery ground for juvenile fish and you can often see shoals of young mullet swimming on the surface. Water-skiing, boating and canoeing can be enjoyed on the Umlalazi River and the surf and lagoon fishing is also excellent. Vast stretches of un-crowded beaches are outstanding for swimming, surfing, windsurfing and angling as well as for long beach walks. Recreational facilities include trampolines, a swimming pool, a tennis wall, swings and other playground equipment. Several walking trails are available and bird watching is a special treat where several species of mangrove can be found. Umlalazi Resort features twelve four-bed self- catering log cabins set into the lush coastal dune forest. Each cabin has a combined lounge dining room, two bedrooms, kitchenette and bathroom with shower or bath. All cabins have DSTV. There are also 50 camp and caravan sites with modern ablution facilities which are 5 minutes away from the beach. The resort have a small curio shop for basic curios, books, cards, beers, wines, cool drinks, wood, charcoal and bait but the rest of other stuff can be obtained from Mtunzini town which is 4km away from the resort. Umlalazi Resort is more accessible from the N2, its 4km away from Mtunzini town and its ideal for last minute booking or walk-in. The community of Umlalazi (Obanjeni) and Mtunzini residents are regular visitors of this resort. Due to the nature of its location most visitors find their way through this resort to overnight after a long drive on the busy N2. This resort has been awarded Ezemvelo Excellency Award in 2016 as the Best Resort.
