LLebo's Soweto Backpackers offer a unique and personal experience of Soweto. Lebo Malepa officially opened South Africa's first Backpackers situated in a township in 2003, welcoming guests from all over the world to his great-grandmothers house. It all started with a few rooms and has now expanded to offer a variety of accommodation including budget style dormitories, private rooms, camping and an option to up-grade to a private secluded self-catering unit. An open field right opposite the Backpackers hostel has transformed from a neglected dirty space to a beautiful park and our Outdoor Restaurant - a space utilised by both our surrounding community as well as our guests. The Backpackers is widely known and popular for the variety of activities that we offer in our area. Soweto being steeped in history and with a diversity of people and cultures we make sure to facilitate the access to the various communities and historical sites for our guests. Our unique and personal tour offerings include bicycle, tuk tuk and walking tours of Soweto. The tours take our guests off the beaten track and into communities and homes giving them a chance to interact and learn from our people. Our guides are all from the area with in depth knowledge of our history, culture and lifestyle. The Backpackers experience also includes home-cooked African meals in our Outdoor Restaurant and around the fire at night. Drum circles, storytelling sessions and a 'vibey' bar area invites locals as well as guests to interact and socialise. Lebo's Soweto Backpackers has been accredited by Fair Trade in Tourism since 2008 for its commitment to uplift our community and use tourism as a tool of community development. We employ 25 staff members all from Soweto and we work hand in hand with small businesses and organisations to make sure more stakeholders can benefit from tourism.
