TTaking place from 15 to 17th May 2018 at the Messe Frankfurt in Germany, IMEX Frankfurt is a global trade exhibition hosted in Germany. It is where influencers from the world of meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) gather for three days of business and networking. There are over 3,000 global exhibitors including tourist boards, international hotel companies, airlines, destination management companies and technology providers. IMEX is also renowned for attracting top-quality hosted buyers together with thousands of trade visitors.

“South Africa hosts about a million business delegates every year and contributes about R115 billion to South Africa’s GDP every year. Given its scale and importance, IMEX Frankfurt is the ideal platform to provide the most updated information about destination South Africa as the ideal and capable business events destination e.g. infrastructure capability, new tourism products,” explained Amanda Kotze-Nhlapo, SA Tourism’s Chief Convention Bureau Officer.

“We will also use the trade show to reassure the global MICE industry that South Africa is very much open for business and that hosting meetings and events in South Africa is a must-do.”

Last year, IMEX Frankfurt attracted over 14 000 delegates with about 3500 exhibitors from 150 countries showcasing their products and services to the world’s most influential travel buyers and trade visitors.

“With the variety of South African product attending IMEX Frankfurt, this also provides the perfect opportunity to showcase the diversity of products available on offer for any business events delegate from anywhere in the world.”

The South African tourism businesses that will be on proud display in Frankfurt include tour operators, airlines, hotels, game reserves, lodges and provincial and city tourism authorities. Significantly, among them will be seven small tourism businesses, whose presence at IMEX Frankfurt is being subsidised by the South African government to give them preferential access to the international market.

Kotze-Nhlapo explained that “SMMEs are an important contributor to the economy as drivers for reducing unemployment. In our sector, the SMMEs are powerful catalysts for job creation, inclusive economic growth and meaningful empowerment. The tourism value chain has far reaching benefits for SMMEs. South African Tourism encourages all international and domestic travellers to buy proudly South African tourism products and services.”

“Also, in the year marking the centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth, we will be continuing commemorating his life and legacy at IMEX Frankfurt by inviting the global business events industry to come host their events in South Africa and get a chance to walk in Madiba’s footsteps by visiting some of the sites across the country that shaped this global icon’s life,” concluded Kotze-Nhlapo.

The third KwaZulu-Natal based SMME exhibiting at IMEX Frankfurt this year is Nyanya Resort.
