South Africa – more than just a picture-perfect country!

Thanks to our rich cultural heritage, community spirit and our harmonious symphony of nature and sustainability, our country boasts a deep commitment to sustainability through our natural endemic assets and the inclusion of our people.

South Africa recently displayed its unmatched beauty and diverse landscapes at the 2024 International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin, Germany, with an impressive array of over 60 tourism products and services, including offerings from 14 Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) spanning all nine provinces.

The continued interest in our country always expressed by various partners at trade shows such as ITB is reason why the tourism sector continues to participate at these trade show.  Global travellers’ enthusiasm for South Africa is notable with 8.5 million visitors coming to this country last year marking a 48.9 % rise from the previous year.

Our country boasts a vibrant soul, and we need to continue to extend a warm welcome to all visitors. Whether it is friends and family from overseas or work colleagues in other countries, the multitude of desirable tourism offers we have, should make it easier for us to do this.  Already for the first two months of 2024, South Africa welcomed 1 697 520 visitors. This is a 16% increase when compared to the same period in 2023 when we welcomed 1 463 107 visitors. 

I am encouraged by the resurgence of tourism-related businesses in various townships across South Africa. With these in place, visitors can supplement standard sightseeing with the authenticity of the township and the rich mosaic that delves deep into the community's heart. Here, visitors from all over the world, get to experience the bustling streets, savour traditional cuisine, being fully immersed in the community.

In addition to this, when exploring South Africa, visitors love a genuine exploration of the nation's history through our country’s rich blend of new activities and unchartered encounters. They explore historical landmarks, vibrant markets filled with local crafts, and museums capturing the community's history thereby celebrating a strong cultural heritage. Enhanced by wide authentic smiles and embraces of South Africans, culinary tours featuring local delicacies enrich any visitor’s experience.

Moreover, iconic sites like Kruger National Park, Table Mountain, and the Drakensberg Mountains captivate visitors. With over 2,800 kilometres of coastline, South Africa offers breathtaking landscapes, and a rich biodiversity, representing a diverse and attractive ecosystem.

South Africa's quality-assured accommodation sector offers many options, from cosy guesthouses to hotels to bespoke luxury lodges. The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa, through its grading criteria, assures high quality and excellent service standards. Establishments are awarded stars, from one to five, reflecting their facilities, service, and overall quality, helping travellers make informed choices.

Since our country basks in over 2,500 hours of sunshine yearly, as South Africans let us do more to invite sunshine lovers to come and rejoice! After all, it is easy and fun to unwind with a cold beverage in the warm South African sun!

Insights and trends show that travellers increasingly crave beyond-the-ordinary experiences, and this aligns perfectly with South Africa's natural soul. Thanks to the many individuals and institutions who continue to ensure that South Africa leads in sustainability. From digital detox experiences to spotting endangered cheetahs in private reserves to homestays that boost local livelihoods, sustainability might as well call South Africa home.

With numerous eco-lodges, conservation projects, and responsible tour operators dedicated to minimising environmental impact while maximising visitor enjoyment, this is the perfect invitation to all wanderlusters from all over the world.

South Africa boasts a remarkable range of ecosystems, from the majestic Kruger National Park to the otherworldly beauty of the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of the world's six floral kingdoms and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As a nation, we have a shared responsibility to nurture all the wonderful fortunes granted to us by nature. Our invitation to the world means protecting our planet while we are growing our sector, and this requires a collective effort.
