What you need to know

TThe sun rises early in KwaZulu-Natal (before 5.30am in summer) and as a result the beaches buzz with activity long before the working day begins. The province’s main city of Durban is particularly energetic and is well equipped to cater for visiting water sport enthusiasts.

Surfboards, paddleboards and sea kayaks can all be hired along the beach near uShaka Marine World if you want to get some morning exercise before breakfast.

The ocean temperature off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal is generally around 27º Celsius in summer and 23º Celsius during winter, meaning that the water here is always warmer than the air in many other parts of the world.

KwaZulu-Natal attracts scuba-divers from around the world, with world-class dive sites such as Sodwana Bay. If you fancy diving with tiger sharks, Aliwal Shoal is regarded as the best site for this.

Further inland, dams such as Inanda, Albert Falls and Midmar are great for camping, as well as activities such as bass fishing, boating, water skiing and jet skiing.

Canoeists should be looking to try out rivers such as the Umkomaas, Umzimkulu and Umgeni. Races to consider include the Dusi (starts in Pietermaritzburg) and the Drak Challenge (based in Underberg).

White water rafting is popular in the northern Drakensberg region.

Best time to visit

Inland water levels in KwaZulu-Natal are at their highest during the summer months (November to April), but as the ocean stays warm throughout the year and there is little or no rain in winter, there’s never a bad time to be outdoors in KwaZulu-Natal.

Things to do

Any water activity you can think of! Or just loll around on the beach.

KwaZulu-Natal is also home to the Drakensberg Mountain range which offers hiking opportunities to all, from short rambles to overnight hiking.

What to pack

A wetsuit will likely be superfluous in Durban, so rather go with a utility costume.

Where to stay

There is a range of hotels along Durban’s beachfront, from 3-star to 5-star grading.
