LLast week, we attended the Conde Nast Traveller Readers’ Awards at the Ham Yard Hotel in London on behalf of Cape Town. We walked away with two awards for our beautiful Mother City.
We were awarded the first prize for “Best Overseas City for Restaurants and Bars” and were runners up for the “Favourite Overseas City”. These awards were voted by the readers of Conde Nast publications.
While we are immensely proud of these wins for Cape Town, the big win was at the recent 2016 Travel Bulletin Star Awards and involved the whole country. Here, South African Tourism was handed the “Star Destination for Cultural & Heritage Holidays” award.

We have not been nominated in these awards for a few years, but with our stronger focus this year on travel agent training and the exceptional work done by Nina Farrimond, the travel agents nominated us for three categories – Star Destination for Escourted Tours; Star All Round Destination; and Star Destination for Cultural & Heritage Holidays.
The travel agents voted for the finalists and the winners were announced at a black-tie gala dinner, which was held at the lovely new Langham Hotel in Oxford Circus. We won Star Destination for Cultural & Heritage Holidays and we couldn’t be prouder.
We always knew that South Africa was a cultural feast and this just proves it. Great news all round, and we couldn’t have done it without our entire industry and the hard working people of South Africa.
All in all, these were some great wins for tourism in South Africa. We look forward to securing more before the year ends.
