BBaviaans-Kouga 4x4 Trail and Travel Route The Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, UNESCO listed World Heritage Site is undeniably one of the most diverse regions in South Africa. Its a privilege to have this varied and unique area here in the Eastern Cape , and of course wonderful to have it as 1 of the 8 World heritage Sites in South Africa, Seven of South Africa’s eight biomes are represented within the Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve – Fynbos, Forest, Grassland, Succulent Karoo, Nama-Karoo, Subtropical Thicket and Savanna. With limited road access, the reserve is guaranteed to remain a natural paradise to be preserved for all South Africans and the World as a place of great scenic beauty and natural diversity. The Baviaans-Kouga 4x4 Trail and Travel Route is a spectacular journey from the coastal Tsitsikamma N2 and R62 Tourist routes in to the heart of the Baviaanskloof Wilderness. This route is a co-operation of Landowners to provide an off-road opportunity to view the Wilderness of the Baviaanskloof and surrounds whilst conserving its wilderness appeal and preserving all of its natural beauty. No where else can we find such a wide ranging diversity of natural beauty for travelers to enjoy and experience African Wilderness 1 st hand whilst on an off road trail as here in the Baviaanskloof. . The Baviaanskloof is fast becoming a national as well as International attraction for the Eastern Cape and South Africa, it ranks in the top ten on peoples wish list of places to visit, and the Baviaans-Kouga trail is proud to be able to showcase this unique area. The actual journey, on leaving the R62, you exit the farming communities of the Tsitsikamma and Langkloof, and head towards the distant peaks of the Kouga Mountains. The landscape changes from scrub land bush and grasses, to the distinctive Fynbos of the Cape Floral Kingdom. This stunning route brings travelers from all over the world, to pass through the area, a much needed , sustainable source of revenue for the local communities of the Langkloof, and of course to its destination the Baviaanskloof itself, surrounding towns and peoples. At Baviaans Lodge, one of the Local Tourism initiatives sustained by the travel route, the trail climbs the foothills of the Kouga Mountains, winding its way through a myriad of Protea species, Cycads, Erica's and Leucadendron's to reach the summit of the Kouga Mountains before slowly descending down in to the Baviaanskloof and the main R332 road. Spectacular views of the Kloof stretching out from left to right greet you as you pass over the " devide " The Fynbos and Cape Floral Kingdom is left behind on the descent into the Kloof, as the landscape changes from Karroo slopes to a mix of Eastern Cape thicket, mingling in a myriad of forms with Subtropical Forest along the banks of Baviaanskloof River. The exit of the trail brings you out on the farm Rus en Vrede, where the Lamprechts Tourism supports a number of tourism ventures, in the heart of the Baviaanskloof. From here, you have the option of taking your journey either to Willowmore and Uniondale or heading towards the Wilderness of the Baviaanskloof and Patensie. Both of these, spectacular in their own rights ! What a choice ! The Baviaans-Kouga 4x4 Trail and Travel route, tourism and local landowner co-operation working together, benefiting the local community, the Eastern Cape , displaying the wonderful natural beauty and remarkable diversity the Eastern Cape and South Africa has to offer
