UUPDATE TO COVID-19 REGULATIONS: ADJUSTED LEVEL 3
In response to the second wave of COVID-19 infections, President Cyril Ramaphosa has introduced further restrictions in order to curb the spread of the pandemic, particularly as the number of positive cases has increased during the festive season.
President Ramaphosa confirmed that South Africa will move to an adjusted Level 3 on the risk adjusted framework.
South Africa has adopted a risk adjusted strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic where level 5 is the strictest in terms of regulations and level 1 the least stringent.
Some of the key areas and elements affected in adjusted level 3 include:
- Nationwide curfew time adjusted to between 21h00 and 06h00, daily, with the exception of essential services.
- All indoor and outdoor gatherings will be prohibited for 14 days, as of 29 December 2020. This is with the exception of funerals and other limited exceptions as detailed in the regulations, such as restaurants, museums, gyms and casinos.
- The sale of alcohol from retail outlets and on-site consumption of alcohol will not be permitted.
- All beaches, dams, lakes, rivers, public parks and public swimming pools in hotspot areas will be closed to the public.
- Non-essential establishments – including shops, restaurants, bars and all cultural venues – must close at 20h00, daily.
- The wearing of masks in public by all individuals is now compulsory and failure to do so is now a criminal offence punishable by law.
Interprovincial travel will still be allowed with the President appealing to everyone to ensure protocols are observed and masks are worn in all public spaces.
International air travel will also still be permitted in line with the current requirements for entry into South Africa
National and provincial parks and other parks where access control measures and entry limitations are already in place may remain open to the public.
From an accommodation perspective, subject to the required protocol, all accommodation establishments are allowed to operate as per level 1 regulations.
The adjusted Level 3 measures will be in place until 15 January 2021.
