 24 May 2018

________________________________________________________________________

With Africa month in full swing, we are on the brink of Africa day on 25 May 2018 – and what better way to express African dynamism, promote social cohesion, anti-xenophobia, arts, culture and tourism than through the Bassline Jazz Club?

In conjunction with Joburg Tourism, the Bassline Jazz Club proudly hosts the 2018 Bassline Fest. Bassline is an institution amongst music fans young and old. In its 24 year run, it has hosted over 3200 concert, featuring many of Africa’s and the Globe’s most famous stars and music icons.

Now in its 14th year as the only Johannesburg-based festival that celebrates African unity and diversity, it is taking over two full days to platform music, food, and dialogue to promote social cohesion across the continent

Joburg Tourism will host sixty (60) high profile media representatives and artists who are part of the 2018 Bassline Festival taking place at the Constitution Hill on 26 May 2018. Bassline Jazz Club are the organisers of the annual Bassline Festival. The theme for the 14th Bassline Festival 2018 is “Tracing Mandela’s Joburg Footsteps” and serves as a special tribute to the celebration of Africa month and the former President Nelson Mandela on 24 May 2018.

Joburg Tourism has collaborated with the City Sightseeing Bus Company to host the educational tour for the invited media and participating artists to experience Johannesburg’s tourism offerings in line with the theme: “Tracing Mandela’s Joburg Footsteps.” The tour  includes the follow attractions:

  • Travel with City Sightseeing's hop-on hop-off red bus to all Johannesburg and
Soweto's top tourist attractions – one of the best ways to explore Joburg at your own pace.

The Footsteps of Nelson Mandela include:

  • Nelson Mandela Foundation Centre of Memory [www.nelsonmandela.org]
  • Known and loved around the world for his commitment to peace, negotiation and reconciliation, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was South Africa’s first democratically elected president (1994 to 1999). Mandela was an anti-apartheid revolutionary and political leader, as well as a philanthropist with an abiding love for children. Mandela was born into the Xhosa royal family on 18 July 1918 and died on 5 December 2013.
  • Constitution Hill   [www.constitutionhill.org.za]
  • Tells the fascinating, often tragic, story of the real South African history; a history in which injustices abounded on social, cultural and political levels. It was once the prison that the famous political freedom icons such as Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi were incarcerated in the Old Fort Prison Complex, commonly known as Number Four during the apartheid era.
  • Apartheid Museum  [www.apartheidmuseum.org]
  • The first of its kind, this museum illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid.  It is a beacon of hope, showing the world how South Africans are coming to terms with their oppressive past and working towards a future that they can all call their own.
  • Mandela Family Museum [www.mandelahouse.com]
  • Commonly referred to as Mandela House, the house is on Vilakazi Street, Orlando West, Soweto, where Nelson Mandela lived from 1946 to 1962. It is located a short distance up the road from Tutu House, the home of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. Mandela donated the house to the Soweto Heritage Trust of which he was the founder on 1st September 1997, to be run as a museum. It was declared a National Heritage Site in 1999.
