2The Heritage Route

Take the N1 north from Johannesburg until you see the signpost indicating Hartbeespoort, which takes you onto the Heritage Route, one of South Africa's oldest tourist routes, where remnants of Iron Age and Stone Age settlements can be seen. The Magaliesberge and Sterkfontein caves are a rich source of hominid remains and the Cradle of Humankind is a World Heritage Site. Other great places to visit along the route include the Hartbeespoort Dam, the Pilanesberg National Park and Sun City.

3Take the golfing route

North West boasts world-class golf courses and you could sample all of them, with some wildlife viewing thrown in for good measure. Start off at the Hartbeespoort Dam where you can tackle the greens of the Pecanwood Golf and Country Club, then head for Sun City, the home of the Nedbank Golf Challenge and the adjacent Lost City Country Club before shooting along the N4 to Mafikeng for a few chips and putts on the Leopard Park Golf Course.

A good starting point for your road trip is the Kgaswane Mountain Reserve in Rustenberg, situated in the western Magaliesberg.
