1Sardine Run
Each year, during the mild winter months (June/July) along the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, the greatest shoal on Earth takes place – a natural phenomenon that sees millions of sardines migrate north from Port St Johns to eThekweni (Durban), followed by dolphins, sharks, gamefish and seabirds.
2Vodacom Durban July
This annual horse racing event draws the country’s who’s who to Greyville Race Course. This historical event is a fashion extravaganza and punters' delight dating back to 1897. It takes place on the first Saturday of July, and is a major social gathering.
3The Comrades Marathon
The world’s most gruelling ultra-marathon, the Comrades, takes runners on a 90km trail between the cities of Pietermaritzburg and Durban. Every year the race draws thousands of runners, both local and international, along with thousands of roadside supporters.

4Mr Price Pro Surfing Competition
For many years the Mr Price Pro Surfing Competition was held at North Beach in eThekweni (Durban). More recently the event has been moved north to a more suitable location at Ballito Bay. This top-rated event attracts a who's who of local and international surfing talent and provides an exciting spectator attraction.
5The Tourism Indaba
The annual 4-dayTourism Indaba takes place at eThekweni's (Durban's) Intertnational Convention Centre during May. The Indaba provides a platform for all stakeholders in the international and domestic tourism and travel industry, and continues to grow bigger each year.
6The Splashy Fen Music Festival, Underberg
Against the backdrop of the magnificent Drakensberg mountain range, 'Splashy' is South Africa’s answer to the Glastonbury Music Festival. In April every year hundreds of young campers and music lovers descend on the farm Splashy Fen to indulge in a non-stop weekend of music and partying.
7The Dusi Canoe Marathon
This annual 120-km canoe race takes over 3 days in January on two river systems. The race starts in Pietermaritzburg and ends at the Blue Lagoon in eThekweni (Durban). The Dusi attracts hundreds of top-class overseas and local paddlers and is one of the country’s most challenging and well-known sporting events.
8The Midmar Mile
The Midmar Mile is the largest open-water swimming event in the world. Every year in February the race attracts both local and international contestants to a long stretch of water on the Midmar Dam in the Natal Midlands, in search of a medal.
9The Hibiscus Festival
Held in July in Margate and along the South Coast to coincide with the winter school holidays, this festival features sporting contests, music events, market days, beauty contests and beach activities to keep the younger crowd entertained.
10The Royal Show, Pietermartizburg
An absolute institution, this decades-old agricultural show brings together horse-lovers, foodies, farmers and families, all out to enjoy a wide variety of interesting stalls, livestock parades, sporting events and fresh regional produce on sale. It takes place from late May to early June each year.
