Windy Brow Hiking Trail

The variety of hiking & mountain bike trails on Windy Brow game farm is a delight for all outdoor enthusiasts, from beginners to the most experienced. The farm used to form part of the bigger farming unit of Elandsfontien where the famous Cullinan Diamond (3106 carats) was discovered. Special features of the farm are the more than 15 species of game and 150 species of birds present here. The three trail options, which cover various habitat zones, ensure that many game and bird species can be seen. The different zones on the network include the Archaeological site with abundant bird life; the Geological route which goes along and over the Quartzite koppie overlooking the Premier Diamond Mine now known as (Petra Diamond Mine ) and the big hole, and the Ecology route on which most mammal species, including Giraffe, Zebra , Gemsbok & Waterbuck, can be spotted. All trails have been so designed and planned that hikers can choose to walk each route from either direction, providing different visas on every occasion. Other excellent ways to view the game will be the two mountain bike trails. The mountain bike trails are a total distance of 17 km. the red route is 8 kilometers and the Green route is a distance of 9 kilometers. From the top of the hills, one has beautiful views of Pretoria. The Premier Diamond Mine now known as (Petra Diamond mine) and the Magaliesberg range. The flora on Windy Brow is remarkable; no fewer than 48 tree species have been identified and marked. All trails have GPS plotted. Windy Brow can also be used by school groups and various educational groups for all types of environmental education and outdoor adventures. Activities offered for groups are a climbing wall, eight meters high with four routes. There is also an 8-10 meter abseiling wall, an obstacle course with various activities and obstacles. Guided astronomy walks, nature interpretation, night and day game drives and an indoor environmental classroom are also available. A new conference centre which overlooks the waterhole where the game converge, called Weavers nest is the perfect location for small conferences, workshops, private functions and weddings for 85 people. Other than a big screen projector, DVD and surround sound are available in the conference room, there is also a big swimming pool, a volley ball court, a big rugby field, and a cricket field. There is a fully equipped kitchen to cater for all functions. Next to the swimming pool are 4 built in braais. Day visitors to Windy Brow could use the facility ONLY when there is no private function in that area. The unspoiled nature of Windy Brow is so close to the large cities that it will be a delight to all nature lovers. Windy Brow trails: • Maximum of overnight facilities Indaba camp: • 50 pax Camp site: • 4 tents • maximum 8 pax Choices of trail lengths: • 8 – 20 km Degree of difficulty: • Easy – average Hikers accommodation: Indaba Camp (max 68 beds): Room (1): • 8 sleeper en suite shower, toilet and basin Room (2): • 20 sleeper Room (3): • 18 – 20 sleeper en suite toilet, shower, and basin Room (4): • 12-16 sleeper all rooms with bunk beds There are separate ablution blocks for men and woman two showers basins and 2 toilets in each ablution. The separate kitchen is equipped with a 4 plate stove two plate gas stove, fridge/freezer & Urn. Ablutions facilities: • 2 x hot / cold water showers • Basins and flush toilets • Wash-up basin. Kitchen facilities: • Gas stove and fridge. Please supply own: • Glasses • Pots and pans • Potjies • Kettles • Cutlery & crockery • Wood and charcoal • Camp fire wood is available to buy from the farm only for camp fire not for braai. Day facilities: Day hikers / Cyclists: six thatched umbrellas, with lovely picnic area under the trees. Ablution facilities are at base camp or Weavers nest. Day visitors welcome to use the swimming pool, volley ball court and braai facilities, only when there are no other private functions in that area. Pertinent Information; There is a minimum booking of 6 overnight visitors and 6 day visitors. Gate code for the weekend will be advised the Thursday / Friday before your visit. Game drives can be organized 3 days prior to your arrival. Location of trails: • 27 km from Pretoria • 4 km outside Cullinan
