KZN Sharks Board

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board is mandated to be a global leader in bather protection against shark attack while minimising environmental impact, thus promoting tourism. KwaZulu-Natal has the only coastline in South Africa that is protected by shark safety gear. The KZN Sharks Board maintains shark safety gear at 38 beaches in KZN and is the only institute of its kind in the world. KwaZulu-Natal has a beautiful coastline that stretches for 600 km from Kosi Bay in the north to Port Edward in the south. It boasts golden, sandy beaches to match the very best on the planet, perfect for families looking for a fun-filled holiday experience. Summary of our role • Protect bathers against shark attack • Conduct biological research • Educate the public about the activities of the KZNSB and the role of sharks in the marine environment. KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board tourist experiences. Boat Trips Go to sea and watch KZNSB staff servicing the shark safety gear off Durban’s Golden Mile beaches. Experience and enjoy the sights of Durban as you travel through the harbour and out to sea into the rising sun. Enjoy opportunistic viewing of marine life including seabirds. Boat trips lasting 2 hours depart Wilsons Wharf at 06h30. Audio Visual & Shark Dissection Shows Tourists and scholars alike can enjoy a dynamic audio visual program that has a powerful combination of aerials, slow pans, tight close-ups and superb imagery. Although the 26 minute presentation is designed to entertain, it is also educational, providing information on subjects such as the sensory biology of sharks and their role as top predators in the marine environment. The show is followed by a shark dissection where you can see the internal anatomy of one of the ocean’s most awesome predators. Show times: Tuesday – Thursday: 09h00 and 14h00 1st Sunday of the month: 14h00 Conference Facility The KZNSB has two magnificent conference facilities for meetings and functions, one accommodating 50 people and the other 300. Shark Museum Visit the Shark Museum and view the large variety of life-like replicas of sharks, including an 892kg Great White Shark as well as other marine animals. Open Monday to Friday 08h00 - 16h00 and 1st Sunday of the month from 13h00 - 16h00. Curio Shop Browse in the Curio Shop where a treasure chest of unusual and stylish gifts awaits you, including handcrafts, T-shirts, leather goods, jewellery and other ornaments. Open Monday - Friday 08h00 to 16h00 and 1st Sunday of the month from 14h00. Other marine tourism activities on the coast of KwaZulu-Natal . Sardine Run Come and witness the annual phenomenon known as the Sardine Run that occurs during late autumn and early winter (primarily June and July), when millions of small silvery fish make their way up the coast pursued by thousands of dolphins, game fish, sharks and sea birds.
