Speed Marketing in Mossel Bay – a resounding success
Tourism product owners and industry leaders in the travel, adventure and hospitality industry from these areas and surrounds gathered together to meet SATSA-accredited tour operators to network, promote their offerings and build relationships, with the aim to encourage future business ventures.
Between 14 and 16 March 2017, tour operators truly immersed themselves in the speed markeing workshops, and what they got out of the experience proved to be as valuable as it was informative. Day one of the workshops was held at The Point Hotel, a luxurious seaside getaway that’s built on the rocks above a natural rock pool, offering sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. From thrilling adventure establishments such as Skydive Mossel Bay and wine estates including Jakkalsvlei Wine Farm to accomodation outlets comprising B&Bs, guest lodges and hotels such as The Protea Hotel (by Marriot Mossel Bay), tourism product owners came out in their numbers to showcase their best. Marketing consultant of The Protea Hotel, Valthia Johnson says: “On TripAdvisor, we’re ranked number three and that says a lot about our product.”
The Café Gannet is a seafood resturant on The Protea Hotel premises and its marketing manager, Riaan Jordaan says: “ I think speed marketing is a good opportunity to market your property. The one-on-one interaction with individuals, specifically the tour operators, is a great way to answer questions related to your establishment in a more informal way.”
Day two of the workshops allowed the tour operators to experience the warm hospitality from staff of the Redberry Farm, a commercial strawberry grower in George. The farm boasts the largest permanent hedge maze in the Southern Hemisphere and consists of seven strawberry stations whereby visitors can pick their own strawberries out of the fields with the majestic Quteniqua Mountains as a backdrop. This exquisite venue played host to the second round of the speed marketing sessions, and tourism products from Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and surrounds descended on the property to interact and promote their offerings.
To say the tour operators were impressed would be an understatement – they were incredibly amazed of what they heard and saw. Products that was presented to them included: Springtide Charters that offers exclusive sailing tours around Knysna’s coast; the Knysna Elephant Park, which offers extraordinary elephant encounters; and Plett Wine Tours, an establishment that takes aspiring wine connoisseurs through the wine-making process and more.
Marketing manager of the Knysna Elephant Park, Dave McCrain expressed his excitement over attending the speed marketing sessions saying: “This is my first time attending and it’s quite an experience. The opportunity to network with the tour operators and other product owners is absolutely amazing. I’ve met incredible people.”
The outcome of the final day of the workshops proved to be just as successful as the previous two sessions. Before the speed marketing kicked off, tour operators got to conduct a site inspection and experience an extraordinary one-on-one interaction with African elephants at the Buffelsdrift Game Lodge in Oudtshoorn, which was also the host venue to the last day of the workshops. This magnficent game lodge, just off the Route 62 in the Klein Karoo (five hours outside Cape Town) offers visitors a truly unique African bush experience. From rhinos, Cape buffalos and giraffes to hippos, you can expect to get a glimpse of an array of wildlife at this one-of-a-kind game lodge.
Of the toursim product owners from the Klein Karoo and surrounding areas, Adley House (a four-star guesthouse) in Oudtshoorn and Hillock Wines were present to interact with the tour operators. Hillock Wines is an impressive boutique cellar (situated in the western Klein Karoo region) that produces both red and white wines, which is incredible considering the Karoo’s vast dryness.
Having the opportunity to meet new people and network with other tourism products was one of the best things about the speed marketing sessions, according to Suné Linde, marketing manager of Buffelsdrift Game Lodge.
