This is SAA’s response to market demand as over the last 3 years there has been a consistent growth in the market between southern Africa and India - Theunis Potgieter, SAA’s general manager: commercial

South African Airways (SAA) will offer direct daily flights between Johannesburg and Mumbai in India from 3 October 2012. The additional frequency comes hot on the heels of SAA’s 5th flight per week, which it launched on 16 June 2012, and the recent announcement of a 6th flight per week, which is due to start on 21 August 2012.

Theunis Potgieter, SAA’s general manager: commercial, said the increase in frequencies echoed SAA’s commitment to the Indian market.

‘This is also SAA’s response to market demand as over the last 3 years there has been a consistent growth in the market between southern Africa and India. South Africa’s entry into the BRICS [Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa] alliance has also played a significant role, leading to a noticeable increase in investment activities between India and South Africa,’ he said.

The airline is using an A330-200 airbus on the Johannesburg/Mumbai route, 1 of its newest and most fuel-efficient aircraft, with 36 business and 186 economy-class seats.

SAA is currently experiencing its strongest growth on routes to various destinations in Africa, Asia, Australasia and Latin America.

The airline will also increase its Johannesburg/Nairobi frequencies from daily to 10 flights a week on 13 September 2012.

'Kenya is a key destination in our East Africa operation and by increasing capacity we are rewarding our loyal customers with a variety of travelling options that they can tailor to match their travel needs,' commented Potgieter.

It will also add capacity to its popular summer holiday routes. SAA will increase its weekly flights between Sao Paulo and Johannesburg from 10 to 11 from 6 October 2013 until 13 March 2013.

The airline will also change to a wide-bodied aircraft to meet demand on its Johannesburg/Mauritius route during the same period.  And from mid-December to mid-January, a bigger aircraft will be used on the Johannesburg/Cape Town route to cater for holiday demand.
