SA fares well in run up to World Travel Awards 2012

South Africa has again scored numerous accolades in the Africa heat of the World Travel Awards.

Cape Town's Clifton Beach. Cape Town's Clifton Beach

Cape Town’s beaches are a huge tourism asset, particularly because they are so divers. We have family beaches, tidal pools, clear water, challenging surf, endless beaches, tranquil coves and more. Our beaches are a place for relaxation, exercise, discovery and inspiration and so appeal to a wide range of travellers and can offer so much in a single visit. - Grant Pascoe, Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing

As a destination, South Africa is no stranger to international awards. However, the 1 competition where the country always shines is the World Travel Awards. These awards honour excellence in the hospitality industry across the globe and once again South Africa has come out tops in the Africa category.

Cape Town was given a unanimous thumbs up in the 'Best Beach Destination in Africa' category against some stiff competition including Diani Beach in Kenya, Zanzibar Island in Tanzania, Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt and Bazaruto in Mozambique. Plettenberg Bay, along the Garden Route, was also on the list of top beaches this year.

Grant Pascoe, Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing, said that the Cape's beaches are among the finest in the world.

'Cape Town’s beaches are a huge tourism asset, particularly because they are so diverse. We have family beaches, tidal pools, clear water, challenging surf, endless beaches, tranquil coves and more. Our beaches are a place for relaxation, exercise, discovery and inspiration and so appeal to a wide range of travellers and can offer so much in a single visit.'

A number of South African establishments and products came out tops including Ellerman's House & Villa ('Africa’s Leading Luxury Villa'); Shamwari Game Reserve ('Africa’s Leading Safari Lodge'), The Saxon Boutique Hotel & Spa ('Africa’s Leading Luxury Hotel) and The Blue Train ('Africa’s Leading Luxury Train'). Fairmont Zimbali was singled out in the 'Leading Tourism Development' category.

Local airlines South African Airways (SAA) and 1Time were awarded kudos for Best Airline and Africa’s Leading Low Cost Airline respectively.

The winners of the regional heats will compete at the Grand Final of the World Tourism Awards 2012, taking place in India in December 2012.
