Satyagraha House in Orchards, Johannesburg, former home of Mahandas Gandhi, has been turned into a museum and guest house. It opened on Tuesday, 8 November 2011.

The house, built by Ghandi’s close friend, German architect Hermann Kallenbach, was home to Gandhi from 1908 to 1909. Here you can learn about the life of one of the world’s most iconic figures.

Satyagraha House is now a registered part of the country’s historical heritage and presents an innovative accommodation concept linking guest house to museum.

All 8 rooms are spread out between the original kraal-shaped house, a cottage added a few years later, and the modern wing built in 2010.

A museum retracing Gandhi’s experiences in South Africa and those he shared with Kallenbach forms part of the house.

Satyagraha House is located at 9 Pine Road, Orchards. The museum is open from 11:00 - 17:00, 7 days a week.
