The Tourism Enterprise Partnership has launched an easy-to-use online resource called Wikitourism that provides up-to-date information about the tourism industry and calls for industry contributions.

TEP’s goal for the wiki is for it to act as a knowledge management tool for the South African tourism industry, providing influences that lead to transformation through allowing equal access to any and all opportunities. – Dr Salifou Siddo, chief executive, TEP

Visitors to the Wikitourism website can access information on industry structures, tourism industry role players, funding and training opportunities and more. They can also become contributors.

A wiki is a collaborative website, which many people can contribute to. The largest and best-known example of a wiki is Wikipedia.

Salifou Siddo, chief executive of the Tourism Enterprise Partnership (TEP), said TEP decided to create a wiki to make sure information is constantly updated through collaboration.

He said the creation of Wikitourism was a natural next step in developing a framework for the sharing, disseminating and integrating of information. ‘TEP’s goal for the wiki is to act as a knowledge management tool for the South African tourism industry, providing influences that lead to transformation through allowing equal access to any and all opportunities,’ he said.

The Wikitourism site has been prepopulated with basic information sourced from various stakeholder websites and communications. TEP is now inviting the industry to contribute to the growth of Wikitourism by becoming authors.

Author rights will be provided on request to anyone wishing to add relevant content to the site. Those wishing to become authors should contact Hannelie du Toit, Manager: Market Access and Research. As the wiki grows and develops, those wanting author rights will be able to apply online.

All content submitted will be proofed by the wiki administrator before being published, with a number of national industry role players being selected to receive wiki administrator rights. Suggestions of potential administrators are also welcome and can be forwarded to Du Toit.

The Wikitourism site is currently open to all visitors, but in future will require those wishing to access the site, to sign up for a free account and then log in.
