Travellers are looking to popular travel blogs for advice on choosing their next holiday destinations.

Getaway Travel Bloggers Conference Keith Jenkins and Nellie Haung say 'Cheers' to Cape Town

The relationship between travel and technology is closer than ever. More and more destinations and businesses are turning to social media to promote their services and reach customers in a more intimate, interactive and instant way. - Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold, Cape Town Tourism CEO.

The Getaway Travel Bloggers Conference, which took place on 4 August in Cape Town, delivered some relevant insights into the world of bloggers, blogging and how travellers buy holidays these days.

Among the excellent line-up of speakers were 4 popular international travel bloggers - in Cape Town from 28 July to 5 August as 'iAmbassadors' for Cape Town Tourism’s digital marketing campaign. These were the USA’s Matt Long from Landlopers.com, Germany’s Melvin Boecher of Traveldudes.org and Travel Talks on Tuesday (a popular Twitter platform), Nellie Haung from Wild Junket magazine (@wildjunket) – who is currently based in Spain, and Keith Jenkins from the Netherlands - who runs a blog called Velvetescape.com.

Representatives of Cape Town Tourism, the main sponsor of the event, were thrilled to have bloggers of this quality all in one room. Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold, Cape Town Tourism CEO, said: ‘The relationship between travel and technology is closer than ever. More and more destinations and businesses are turning to social media to promote their services and reach customers in a more intimate, interactive and instant way.’

She pointed out that social media spaces are where the 'real' travel stories are being told and that today’s modern traveller is looking for authenticity above all else.

‘Travel bloggers are travel influencers. Using the web and social media networks as their platforms they influence people, instigate conversations and play a huge role in people’s travel decisions. Cape Town Tourism’s digital journey has just started and we are about to embark on our next adventure - a first of its kind partnership between a city and Facebook. We believe it will entice many more travellers to visit our shores,' she said.

The 4 international travel bloggers only had good things to say about Cape Town. There is every chance that this will contribute to a rise in future visitor numbers.
