It’s just great to be here in London and receive this acknowledgment and award. I feel so proud of what we have achieved over these three years. We will continue to build The Test Kitchen slowly and carefully, one dish at a time. – Chef Luke Dale-Roberts

The 2014 World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards ceremony took place in London’s Guildhall on 28 April 2014 – with The Test Kitchen from Cape Town taking 48th place, as well as being named the ‘Best Restaurant in Africa’.

The Test Kitchen is the brainchild of chef Luke Dale-Roberts and offers patrons a multi-sensory dining experience with a play on combinations, cooking techniques and a mix of flavours, all beautifully plated up as culinary works of art. The open-plan kitchen means that diners get to be part of the creative experience.

Dale-Roberts was in the United Kingdom to attend the awards ceremony and was thrilled with the outcome. 'It's just great to be here in London and receive this acknowledgment and award. I feel so proud of what we have achieved over these three years. We will continue to build The Test Kitchen slowly and carefully, one dish at a time,' he said.

According to Dale-Roberts, the food philosophy at The Test Kitchen is deliberately unique: ‘I’m a non-conformist, something that has got me into a lot of trouble in the past. My vision for The Test Kitchen is to be original in every aspect of the experience. The central purpose of the restaurant is the exploration of flavour; I explore every facet of an ingredient, and that philosophy has remained central to the decisions we make in all areas of the restaurant.’

Dale-Roberts is no stranger to the esteemed World’s Best Restaurants list. The Test Kitchen won the 'Cacao Barry One To Watch' award in 2013, placed 61st on last year’s awards list and made it to position 74 in 2012. Locally, Dale-Roberts has also made his mark – he won the local Eat Out DStv Restaurant Awards 'Chef of the Year' in 2011, with The Test Kitchen being named the Eat Out DStv Restaurant Awards 'Restaurant of the Year' in 2012 and 2013.

Dale-Roberts clearly has a vision for the future of The Test Kitchen: 'I would like to see it continue to grow, evolve and mature. Above all, I have realised that I would like to do this gently so that the process remains a pleasure for all those involved in it.'

Certainly, pleasure is on the menu for diners who cannot stop raving about The Test Kitchen. Chances are that this Cape Town eatery is going to steadily move up the World's 50 Best Restaurants list as it continues to compete with the world’s finest restaurants.
